Understanding Root Calculations
A root of a number x is another number that, when multiplied by itself a certain number of times, gives x. For example, the square root of 16 is 4 because 4 × 4 = 16.
n√x = y means yn = x
Common Types of Roots
- Square Root (n=2): The most common type, written as √x
- Cube Root (n=3): Written as ∛x
- Fourth Root (n=4): Written as ∜x
Properties of Roots
- Every positive number has exactly one positive nth root when n is positive
- Negative numbers only have real odd-numbered roots
- The nth root of 1 is always 1 for any positive integer n
