Understanding Exponents
An exponent (or power) indicates how many times a number is multiplied by itself. For example, 2³ means 2 × 2 × 2 = 8.
Key Rules of Exponents
- Multiplication Rule: xa × xb = xa+b
- Division Rule: xa ÷ xb = xa-b
- Power Rule: (xa)b = xa×b
- Zero Rule: x0 = 1 (for x ≠ 0)
- Negative Rule: x-n = 1/xn
Special Cases
- Any number raised to 1 equals itself
- 1 raised to any power equals 1
- Negative numbers raised to even powers give positive results
- Negative numbers raised to odd powers give negative results
